A MINUTE FOR HANDOUTS

10-11 GRADES

1. This is a reading activity aimed at a good pre-intermediate class to Intermediate. There is a short newspaper article about a restaurant that sells very unhealthy food. The worksheet includes a vocabulary match task, the article, comprehension questions and then some discussion questions. There are two versions of the worksheet- the second is a little easier. This is based on a true newspaper article and I have adapted it. Maybe you could ask students if they've seen the US programme 'Man v Food' or know of something similar in their country!

2. This video is great for raising awareness about loneliness, its possible causes and how to help yourself or others who are in this situation. The worksheet provides you with some questions for discussion, and highlights a few keywords. The video should be screened in sections, and there should be enough time for the students to discuss the questions with their partner(s) before watching the next part of the video. Then you can have a plenary discussion after each section. This might be a sensitive topic for some people, so only propose this activity in groups with a certain maturity. The video comes with English subtitles, so you can turn this on with lower level classes. video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3Xv_g3g-mA

3. Based on the TedEd video "What is a calorie", this worksheet is great for CLIL teens who are taking science in English, as well as adults. The animation helps understanding, and the questions help students to follow the video. It can be followed by some project or discussion. 4. This worksheet is based on the Bear Grylls` TV series "Escape From Hell".
The worksheet follows the first (on some websites it is marked as second) episode "Snow"in order of narration. It is about 3 people who survived against all odds when they got lost in the severe winter trapped in the mountains of US and Canada. Students can practice vocabulary, Past Simple or Continuous. I used it as an extra activity for the subject of Survival.

5. This is a worksheet that goes over sickness words like headache, earache, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, etc. It has a picture matching activity and then a small reading activity about a visit to the doctor. After that, students can practice speaking with some questions about being sick and hospital visits. If you have time, students can make a dialogue between a doctor and a patient and present it to the class.
