A MINUTE FOR HANDOUTS

CULTURE/FREE TIME

(5-6 GRADES)

Think about what brings you pleasure. Think about how much time per day, week, or month you would like to devote to your hobby. It would be great if everyone had enough opportunities to develop their interests and abilities, right?
Therefore, students need to be shown how important it is to devote time to themselves and how can this be combined with study, work and routine life. Here are some exercises:)

1.  This worksheet based on the movie, Pele: Birth of a Legend. It includes three sections, before watching, while watching, and after watching. It is designed for pre-intermediate levels. Hope it works.

2. For intermediate levels. Perfect for topics related to sports. What activities are sports? Running and football? Sure. Synchronized swimming? Probably. Ballroom dancing? Maybe. Playing cards? Probably not. Gardening? Definitely not. Most people believe that sports must combine physical activity and competition. If we use this definition, then extreme ironing is a sport.

3. This worksheet is about hobbies and free time and clubs running in a school. Students learn vocabulary about hobbies, indoors and outdoors activities, after school activities. Then they have to do a personality quiz to find out which club is the one for them : the music club, the ICT club, the sports club or the art club. Students tot up their hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades then they read the results and find out which club is the one for them.

4. This mind map hopefully helps to collect the words and phrases that connect or describe the topic free time. It can get printed or photocopied and given to the students to complete it, or can be projected on the interactive whiteboard and can be completed on the board.

5. A lesson for upper-primary school students (or maybe very new secondary school students) at elementary or pre-intermediate levels, acting as an extension activity after studying a unit on sport. Students read about some new sports which contain elements of more traditional ones. After extracting information about rules, equipment etc from these texts, they then work in pairs or groups to create their own brand new sport. Finally, they deliver a short presentation to the class, telling them all about their ideas - how to play, how to win, necessary equipment etc.
